MASTER OF MISHAPS 2024 – TETSUYA FURUNO

MASTER OF MISHAPS 2024 – TETSUYA FURUNO

For the World Pump Track Championship 2024 in Durban, South Africa, VGAN introduced the concept “MASTERS OF MISHAPS.” We wanted to celebrate and honor the best “oops” moments of the event.

All riders, crew, and the crowd were encouraged to capture entertaining falls and fails during events, practice sessions, or even outside the arena.

The winning mishap would receive a unique, one-of-a-kind “MASTER OF MISHAPS” trucker cap.

MASTER OF MISHAPS

THE MASTER OF MISHAPS 2024 – TETSUYA FURUNO
Straight out of Niigata, Japan, BMX rider and ski cross racer Tetsuya Furuno claimed the title with an impressive flight over the handlebars during the practice rounds at the KwaMashu pump track.

As if the fall and subsequent fractured wrist injury weren’t enough, Tetsuya was also not allowed to fly home for a week following the surgery in Durban. This forced him to extend his stay in Umhlanga. We caught up with him as he relaxed at his hotel and asked him a few questions.

MASTER OF MISHAPS

So, Tetsuya, how did you find the event, despite the masterful mishap?
Although I was disappointed that I couldn't participate, it was exciting to watch the amazing games.

How did you first get into pump track?
I discovered a pump track while in Europe and started riding it. Then, I began racing last year.

Is pump track big in Japan?
Not yet. There are only four Velosolutions pump tracks in Japan. However, this year, I built the biggest pump track in my hometown.

What other sports do you do?
I used to be a professional ski athlete until 2023, and I still love skiing for fun.

What are your plans after Durban? Will we see you back on the bike competing at the next World Championships?
I’ll enjoy skiing after healing from my injury, maybe build another pump track, and yes, I’ll try again next year for the Pump Track Worlds!

We’re thrilled to hear that, Tetsuya! We can’t wait to see you back in action next year in Switzerland.

Honoring the Fun in Every Fail
At VGAN, we know that the best stories often come from the moments that don’t go as planned. Through Masters of Mishaps, we’ve had a blast celebrating the falls, fails, and funny moments that make events like these so memorable.

We’re excited to keep this tradition alive at future events. Whether it’s pump track, death dive, cooking or anything else, we’ll be there to highlight the “oops” moments that remind us all to laugh, keep going, and enjoy the ride.

Here’s to the spills and thrills
