UNUSUAL, BUT AMAZING LOCATION
The 2024 UCI Velosolutions Pump Track World Championships took place in an unusual location this year, in the KwaMashu township north of Durban. 64 athletes from 16 countries competed on a 191-meter-long course for the rainbow jerseys of the world champions.
MASTER OF MISHAP TETSUYA FURUNO
Utmost precision from the riders was required, as any small mistake could lead to injury with g-forces going up to 10G in the steep turns. The only crash in the race led to a broken arm of Japanese rider Tetsuya Furuno.
MOUNTAIN BIKE VS BMX
In the all-Australian knockout final against Aaron Donald, Ryan Gilchrist was the first mountain biker in five years to clearly prevail against the recently dominant BMX riders. Third place went to defending champion Alec Bob from the United States ahead of Eddy Clerte from France.
SABINA VS NADINE IN THE FINALE
In the women's category, Christa von Niederhaeusern from Switzerland's winning streak ended. After a total of three world championship titles, this time she had tosettle for sixth place.
The title went to her long-term rival Sabina Košárková from the Czech Republic, who defeated Nadine Aeberhard from Switzerland in the final. Third place went to Vineta Petersone ahead of Kristina Madarasova from Slovakia.
